Innovative pancake batters

Nowadays you can buy ready-to-use batter for waffles and American pancakes in Swedish food stores. They are sold under the trademark Pancake & Friends by the Swedish company United Pancakes, owned by Aventure AB. ”Carefully selected kinds of flours with a unique mixing technique has made it possible to keep the batter fluid all the way from the factory to the consumer,” says Olof Böök, United Pancakes’ director of research and development. The company also produces a pancake batter made of oat milk, previously marketed by Oatly. Both this and the new batters contain bicarbonate of soda that does not activate before it hits the frying pan. The target group is active families that need a fast snack. There are also plans to sell the batters to institutional kitchens. And in early 2012, a launch is planned in the Norwegian market. The batters are produced by Trensums Food in Tingsryd.

New company for prepackaged pancake batter (Nov, 2010)

Oatly has moved its prepackaged pancake batter over to the newly founded company United Pancakes AB, which produces and sells the batter under the trademark Yellow Flying Pancake & Friends.

United Pancakes launched its prepackaged pancake batter in September. It is based on oats, which are free from milk protein and lactose, gluten and soy protein, i.e. a SärNär product. It is basically the same batter as in Oatly’s prepackaged pancake batter, but the recipe has been somewhat improved upon. In addition, the batter is sold in practical stand-up plastic bags that can be shaken and kneaded to make the batter smooth before baking. The bag also has a screw top. To begin with, the batter will be sold by Ica and Axfood.

Oatly’s pancake batter has been further developed by the research company Aventure, which has also developed the technology for other types of batters.

Mats-Ola Kindstedt is the CEO of United Pancakes, with headquarters in Lund. The batter is manufactured in the Kågeröd facility of Danish Fipros A/S, where a new production line has been installed.  ”During the autumn we aim to help Oatly’s pancake customers recognize the batter under its new label. Next year, we will augment our marketing with new activities to boost the concept of prepackaged batters in the stores. We will also introduce new products for both regular grocery stores and supermarkets next year,” says Mats-Ola Kindstedt. He says that several types of batters based on different kinds of flours, milk, etc will be developed over time, e.g. American pancakes and waffles. At present, 5 – 6 Fipros employees are working with the United Pancakes production in Kågeröd. Business angels, Innovationsbron [the Innovation Bridge] and Almi are putting up ca ten million SEK. The principle owners of United Pancakes AB are Aventure and Innovationsbron.

Pancake batter attracts millions of Swedish kronor in investments (Oct, 2010)

An idea spawned by the Scanian-based company AVENTURE has attracted investments in the SEK million range. United Pancakes, the new company introducing prepackaged pancake batter, is now being set up.

United Pancakes has just received ca ten million SEK from financial angels, Innovationsbron (the Innovation Bridge) and Almi. The investors include Readsoft CEO Jan Andersson and the entrepreneur Christain Witt. United Pancakes is a spin-off of Aventure, the Oatly research company.

The first prepackaged pancake batter is just being launched. Like other Oatly products, it is based on oat milk, but an expansion of the assortment is one of the purposes of the spin-off.

“Under Oatly’s brand name we can only develop products that contain no milk, wheat gluten or soy. We see prepackaged pancake batter as a convenience concept that can be developed into several different varieties,” says Mats-Ola Kindstedt, CEO of United Pancakes and former CEO of Oatly.

The batter is produced and packaged in the premises of Danish Fipros at Kågeröd, where a handful of jobs have been created from the very start.

“We believe that this concept will sell like, well, hotcakes! And we figure on employing ten to fifteen people in a few years’ time,” says Mats-Ola Kindstedt.

About half of the ten million SEK available to the company at present are loans and the other half investments.

“That will suffice for the coming year, but we may need fresh, new money depending on our expansion and further development,” says Mats-Ola Kindstedt.

Aventure and Innovationsbron will be the principal owners of the new company. Per Heander, in charge of investments, won’t reveal how much state-owned Innovationsbron has invested, but says that it’s one of the major investments of their Skåne-based section this year.
